In April 2020, according to the U.S.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/terms\/b\/bls.asp\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">Bureau of Labor Statistics<\/a>&nbsp;data, U.S. employers laid off more than 20 million workers and 22.4 million in two months.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>To maintain jobs, the U.S. government suggested the&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/your-guide-to-the-paycheck-protection-program-ppp-and-how-to-apply-4802195\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">Paycheck Protection Program<\/a>&nbsp;and brought in&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/congress-agrees-on-second-stimulus-here-s-what-s-in-it-and-what-s-not-5093226\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">the Consolidated Appropriations Act of 2021<\/a>&nbsp;(CAA) law on Dec. 27, 2020.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The U.S. program called PPP for a loan to small businesses impacted by the economic slowdown because of the COVID pandemic to pay employees&#8217; wages and other expenses.&nbsp;<a href=\"https:\/\/www.investopedia.com\/coronavirus-aid-relief-and-economic-security-cares-act-4800707\" target=\"_blank\" aria-label=\" (opens in a new tab)\" rel=\"noreferrer noopener nofollow\" class=\"ek-link\">CARES Act<\/a>&nbsp;created this and initially included $349 billion in funding; however, the money was exhausted within two weeks, with the second funding totaling $310 billion.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>The PPP prompted companies not to remove workers during the pandemic.&nbsp;<\/p>\n\n\n\n<p>After round two loans ended in August 2020, the CAA authorized the third round of PPP loans. The third round of funding of $84 billion helped the PPP goals to contain layoffs and other costs to help businesses remain viable and allow their workers to pay their bills. But, funds were depleted, and the PPP became extinct by May 31, 2021.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<h3 id=\"layoff-statistics\" class=\"wp-block-heading\"><span class=\"ez-toc-section\" id=\"Layoff_Statistics\"><\/span><strong>Layoff Statistics<\/strong><span class=\"ez-toc-section-end\"><\/span><\/h3>\n\n\n\n<p>Layoffs are common in the U.S. and also around the world. The following statistics are vital to know:<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>Layoff anxiety is expected in 61\\% of adults between 18-34 years.&nbsp;<\/strong><\/li><\/ul>\n\n\n\n<p>Layoff anxiety has become extremely common in young adults, with the majority undergoing it. 41\\% of adults aged 35 years or older have suffered from layoff anxiety; a smaller percentage still constitutes a large portion of the population.<\/p>\n\n\n\n<ul class=\"wp-block-list\"><li><strong>51\\% of workers between 18-34 remain unprepared for a layoff.<\/strong>&nbsp;Those over 55 years are unprepared for a layoff.
